NJ.com Top 20, but the six-division conference isn’t just top heavy, with two Top-5 ranked teams already losing to unranked opponents less than two full weeks into the 2017 season.
On Friday evening, Corryn Eckel sealed the upset for Jackson Memorial, heading in the game-winning goal midway through the second half in a 2-1 win over Toms River North, No. 4 in the NJ.com Top 20.
Madison Stalker started the play, sending the ball into the box from 20 yards out, and with the Toms River North keeper charging to play the high bouncing ball, Eckel came in to get her head on it and knock it into the back post.
“We pressured their backs,” Jackson Memorial coach Drew Gibson said. “We have pretty good speed at the forward position, and I think we put enough pressure on them to get some opportunities. We didn’t get a ton of opportunities, but we took advantage of what was there.”
Lindsay Bathmann scored the first goal for Jackson Memorial, getting the score in the first half on a penalty kick, and helping Jackson Memorial improve to 4-2 on the season after a 1-2 start.
